It’s easy to see why Nissan vehicles are so popular among Lakeside drivers, but you may be wondering about the origins of this iconic brand. So, who makes Nissan, and where is Nissan made? Greenway Nissan of Jacksonville explores these questions and more about the beloved Nissan brand. Find out where your favorite Nissan vehicle is produced below!

Who Owns Nissan?

Nissan has been part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance since 1999. The first Nissan cars were produced in Japan in 1935 at the flagship Nishi-ku, Yokohama headquarters. Over the next few decades, the popularity of Nissan automobiles really took off, and the company became a truly global brand. Nissan made its arrival in the United States in 1958, and in 1990, Nissan North America was established. Nissan North America, Inc., is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee. The brand’s North American operations handle the following:

  • Automotive styling
  • Automotive engineering
  • Consumer/corporate financing
  • Sales and marketing
  • Distribution
  • Manufacturing

Where is Nissan From?

Where is Nissan made? Nissan has production facilities across the globe, allowing the brand to innovate and create the vehicles you have come to love. While the brand is headquartered in Japan, production of Nissan products began in Mexico in 1966. The Nissan brand expanded further by building facilities in both Australia and Taiwan. In 1983, the first Nissan production facility in the United States was open for business. It is located in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Currently, there are Nissan manufacturing facilities in America:

  • Smyrna, Tennessee
  • Decherd, Tennessee (Nissan and INFINITI)
  • Canton, Mississippi

The Smyrna plant is the highest-volume vehicle assembly plant in North America. This facility is responsible for producing the Nissan Altima, Maxima, LEAF, Rogue, Pathfinder, and INFINITI QX60. Production at the Canton location began in 2003. This facility handles the production of the Nissan Altima, Frontier, TITAN, Murano, and NV Cargo and Passenger Vans. Powertrain components are produced at the Decherd locations.
